What is GPC?
Global Privacy Control (GPC) is a browser setting or extension that automatically sends a signal telling websites that the user wants to opt out of the sale or sharing of their personal data.
Certain privacy laws, such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), require businesses to honor this signal when it’s detected in a visitor’s browser.
How do I enable GPC in Termly?
You control GPC per region in your Consent Banner settings.
Go to Dashboard → Consent Management → Consent Banner.
Choose the relevant Region (for example, States with consumer privacy laws).
Under Advanced options:
Check Enable “Do not sell or share my information” option.
Then check Respect GPC signal.
Click Save and Republish your banner.
Note: GPC can only be enabled when “Do not sell or share my information” is turned on.
What happens when GPC is enabled?
When Respect GPC signal is enabled and a visitor’s browser sends a GPC signal:
The visitor is automatically opted out via the “Do not sell or share my information” mechanism.
The consent banner will not appear to that visitor, because they’ve already expressed their preference via GPC.
Instead, Termly shows a small toast notification at the bottom of the screen that says:
“Your global privacy preferences have been applied.”
The toast automatically disappears after a reload, or the visitor can close it with the X button.
How can I test that GPC is functioning?
You can test GPC in two ways:
1. Use a GPC-compatible browser or extension
Install a GPC-compatible browser/extension (for example, the Global Privacy Control Inspector).
Enable Global Privacy Control (GPC) in the extension settings.
Visit your website in a new session.
If everything is configured correctly, you should:
Not see the consent banner.
See the “Your global privacy preferences have been applied.” toast message.
2. Check consent logs
In Consent Logs, each consent event will show whether a GPC signal was detected for that visitor. This lets you verify that Termly received and honored the signal.
