How can I enable IAB TCF 2.2 in my CMP?
Updated over a week ago

Introduction to the IAB Transparency & Consent Framework (TCF)

The Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) Transparency & Consent Framework (TCF) is a standard developed to assist ad publishers and vendors to comply with certain provisions of the ePrivacy Directive and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The GDPR and ePrivacy Directive are European laws meant to protect the privacy and personal data of EU citizens. The IAB TCF was designed to provide transparency and control to users over the use and processing of their personal data by online advertising companies.

At Termly, we support the latest version of the framework, IAB TCF 2.2.

How to enable IAB TCF in Your Termly Consent Management Platform (CMP)

As a publisher, you can easily enable IAB TCF in your Termly Consent Management Platform (CMP) from the Termly dashboard.

  1. Navigate to your Consent Management > Consent Banner Settings > Consent Settings > select the Europe tab.

  2. Enable the IAB TCF option.

Before saving your changes to your CMP, be sure to configure your IAB TCF vendors. Vendors can be added and removed manually. Termly's scanner will also automatically attempt to detect vendors on your site with each scan, and add them to your CMP.

Using the right version of embed script

In order for the IAB TCF treatment of the banner to apply, you must be using the latest version of the Termly embed script. The correct script is in the following format:

<script type="text/javascript" src="https://app.termly.io/resource-blocker/UUID?autoBlock=on" ></script>

If you're unsure about which format you use, simply grab the installation script from your Termly dashboard again.

If you use the GTM template or WordPress plugin to install Termly, you must update to the latest versions of those.

Impact of enabling IAB TCF in Your Consent Banner

Once IAB TCF is enabled, any users located in Europe who view your Consent Management Platform (CMP) will be presented with the IAB TCF treatment for your consent banner. This may include different banner behavior, button options, and text requirements, all designed to ensure compliance with the TCF standards.

Customization Restrictions for TCF Compliance

Please note that in order to comply with the strict requirements of the TCF, certain customization options for your consent banner will be disabled or overridden. This includes:

  1. The ability to choose between opt-in or opt-out consent

  2. Edit banner text, and customize the displayed buttons

  3. Turn on/off scroll-to-consent functionality.

These restrictions are needed to ensure that your CMP meets the necessary compliance standards under the IAB TCF.
