Overview
Banner views are counted when Termly's script loads on a page, before the banner visually renders. Because this happens at the JavaScript level, only traffic that executes JavaScript can trigger a banner view count. That said, it's important to understand how this affects your monthly allowance.

How Banner Views Are Counted
A banner view is recorded when the Termly script loads and executes on a page. This happens before the consent banner renders visually. As a result:
- Traffic that does not execute JavaScript (such as basic web crawlers that only fetch raw HTML) will not trigger a banner view.
- Traffic that does execute JavaScript, including headless browsers and some sophisticated bots, will trigger a banner view, just like a human visitor would.
Does Termly Filter Out Bot Traffic?
Currently, Termly does not filter or exclude bot traffic from banner view counts. Reliably identifying bots is technically difficult because:
- User agent strings (the identifier a browser or bot sends) are easy to forge.
- There is no universally reliable way to distinguish an automated visitor from a human one.
- Maintaining an up-to-date list of known bots would add overhead and still not be foolproof.
For these reasons, any visit that executes the Termly script, whether from a human or a bot, counts toward your banner view allowance.

If your banner view count has increased significantly and you suspect bot or automated traffic may be involved, here's what we recommend:
What If I'm Seeing an Unexpected Spike in Banner Views?
If your banner view count has increased significantly and you suspect bot or automated traffic may be involved, here's what we recommend:
- Check your site analytics (e.g., Google Analytics, Cloudflare, or your hosting dashboard) for unusual traffic patterns, such as high-volume visits from unfamiliar regions, IP addresses, or user agents.
- Review your server or CDN logs for signs of automated traffic, unusually fast page loads, repeated identical requests, or traffic from known bot IP ranges.
- Contact Termly Support with the relevant timeframe and any data you've gathered. Our team can look into the activity on our end and help assess whether the spike appears to be bot-related.
